Dr. Robert Carmichael - Prosthodontics
Robert Carmichael: A multidisciplinary approach to habilitation of children and young adults with congenital absence of teeth.
This lecture will review the prevalence, etiology and consequences of congenital absence of teeth, and explore the evidence base supporting the use of dental implants in the treatment of young adults and, in some cases, children. A holistic, multidisciplinary approach is advocated involving: pediatric dentist, orthodontist, surgeon and prosthodontist. General guiding principles will be reviewed that govern decision-making around: pediatric dental care, orthodontic treatment goals, determination of skeletal maturity, surgical management, prosthodontic habilitation and aftercare. Hopefully that this presentation will help practitioners to organize their thoughts and workflow when dealing with congenital absence of teeth superimposed on the dynamic framework of growth and development.
